Beginning in May 2002 Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) students from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) are providing pharmacy services to the Greater Roslindale Medical and Dental center ( GRMDC ). These students are currently in their 6th year of pharmacy school and are completing a 5 week Advanced Community Pharmacy rotation at Sullivan's Pharmacy. The rotation is ongoing throughout the year. The MCPHS students are supervised by Professor Susan Jacobson, M.S., R.Ph., Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at MCPHS and Greg Laham, R.Ph., owner of Sullivan's Pharmacy in Roslindale Square. At Sullivan's, students learn and participate in all aspects of community pharmacy practice. Sullivan's Pharmacy is a major provider of pharmacy services to the Roslindale community, especially the patients at GRMDC. The PharmD. Students are assigned to the health center one day per week. Their involvement includes mini lectures to the staff, answering drug information questions that arise from staff and patients, and to "shadow" the staff in activities such as asthma teaching, diabetes teaching and smoking cessation. Additional goals of the program will be to assist the center in holding "brown bag" sessions where patients bring in their medications from home and the pharmacy students provide information about those medications and anything else regarding drug treatment. MCPHS students appreciate the collaboration between Sullivan's Pharmacy and GRMDC to promote a great learning environment for future pharmacists and the ability to help the community have a better understanding of their drug therapy.
