For those of us who believe that success in life requires regular reading from the time of our earliest, formative years and later, into an alert older mind, we proudly present our 3rd annual literary evening!
Once again, this year's event returns to the West Roxbury Pub & Restaurant on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. Featured this year is author Thomas J. Whalen and his work "Kennedy Versus Lodge" in which Mr. Whalen provides a penetrating analysis of this pivotal election in Massachusetts. And he tells the facinating story of a polital duel between two families tha spanned nearly half a century. Whalen details how the candidates' different backgrounds influenced their attitudes toward public service and electoral polics, examies the structure and effectiveness of their campaign organizations, and discusses the intra-party squabbles that each man had to deal with. In addition, he considers how Kennedy's triumph marked the shift form Republican to Democratic dominance in postwar Massachusetts.
An admission price of $50.00 covers the cost of this year's book, the lecture with the author, and dessert.
This is the third in a series of literary nights. In 2001, Robert Colt presented "Campaigning with James Michael Curley". In 2002, Thomas O'Connor presented "The Hub: Boston Past and Present".
Thomas J. Whalen received his Ph.D. in American history from Boston College. He currently teaches twentieth-century American history at Boston University and has written for several publications, including the Boston Globe. He lives on Boston's North Shore.
The GRHO literary evening has become a popular fixture in our community's calendar.
